The Making of Scroll: Tiffany Duggan X Jennifer Manners

Step inside a room that did not yet exist. A room drawn only in plans, imagined through sketches, swatches and stories. A room where every detail, from the hidden bar to the carpet beneath your feet, had a role to play.

This was the challenge behind Scroll, a completely bespoke wall-to-wall carpet created by Studio Duggan in collaboration with Jennifer Manners for the Black Edition Speakeasy Salon at WOW!house, designed in partnership with The Romo Group.

The result is a room filled with intrigue, character and a sense of discovery. But before Scroll became the grounding element of this atmospheric interior, it began as an idea: a conversation between designer and maker about colour, proportion and the emotional power of a carpet.

A Room Designed Around a Feeling

At this year’s WOW!house, Tiffany Duggan brought her signature sensibility to life for a first appearance at the showcase. Recognised among House & Garden’s Top 100 Interior Designers & Architects and Country & Town House’s 50 Finest Interior Designers, she has become one of the industry’s most influential design studios.

Allocated the Courtyard Room, Tiffany created an interior inspired by the secretive glamour of 1920s speakeasies. Conceived as a space for entertaining, conversation and lingering, the room was designed to reveal itself slowly and a new partition wall was implemented to create a sense of mystery, concealing a hidden speakeasy bar beyond. It became less about simply looking beautiful and more about how it would feel to inhabit.

The carpet was central to this vision.

“The Scroll itself was one of the first things we drew on the plan, which we felt linked everything together really nicely,” Tiffany explains.

There was one small complication: the carpet had to be designed before the room physically existed.

Every measurement, every architectural detail and every furniture placement existed only on paper. The design needed to be precise enough to work perfectly once the room came to life.

This is the unique magic of WOW!house. Each interior is created as a singular moment, where every element is considered, crafted and brought together with extraordinary attention to detail.

From a Velvet Swatch to a Carpet Design

Rather than selecting an existing pattern, Tiffany and Jennifer Manners began with a completely blank canvas.

The first step was colour.

Inspired by a discontinued Temperley x Romo velvet, the team set out to capture a very particular olive tone. It was a process of refinement, adjusting and perfecting multiple samples until the exact shade was achieved.

Once the foundation was right, the next layer of the story began: the border.

The oversized scroll motif became the defining feature of the carpet. Drawing inspiration from traditional Italian ornament, the design was reinterpreted through a more playful, contemporary lens.

“We made it quite oversized,” Tiffany says. “It plays with the proportions of what might have been an ornate Italian scroll and makes it feel much more playful and fun.”

The result is a pattern that feels familiar yet unexpected, balancing heritage with a fresh, modern energy.

The final detail was the delicate lilac accent woven through the design.

Created in Jennifer Manners’ luxurious bamboo silk, the subtle contrast brought a softness and luminosity to the rich olive ground.

“We chose this lovely, very subtle lilac in your gorgeous bamboo silk, which just really sets it off,” Tiffany says. “I love really zingy green against brown.”

The colour journey was not without its decisions. Tiffany debated between a green carpet and a lilac carpet, until the surrounding scheme revealed the answer.

“When we saw the rest of Romo’s fabrics, with all those earthy, pinky, rusty, brownie hues, we realised the carpet could counterbalance everything beautifully.”

It became the perfect anchor for the room: grounding, unexpected and full of personality.

From Sketchbook to Studio

Over several months, Scroll evolved through conversations, colour testing, material exploration and countless samples.

Once approved, the design travelled to Jennifer Manners’ artisan partners in India, where skilled makers transformed the concept into reality using luxurious New Zealand wool and bamboo silk.

Every element was brought to life by hand, from the precision of the pattern to the intricate craftsmanship that gives the carpet its depth, softness and texture.

The finished piece became more than a floor covering. It became the foundation of the room.

“A space like this has quite grand proportions and tall ceilings, and you're trying to create something that feels really homely,” Tiffany explains. “Wall-to-wall carpet immediately gives you that comforting, warming feeling, and it stands out really beautifully.”

Scroll is a celebration of what happens when designer and maker collaborate from the very beginning.

From recreating the tone of a discontinued velvet to creating a carpet for a room that existed only as a drawing, every stage was guided by curiosity, precision and a shared appreciation for exceptional craftsmanship.

It is a reminder that the most memorable interiors are often built from the details that take the most time: the colours that require endless refinement, the patterns that are carefully reimagined and the materials that are patiently brought to life by skilled hands.

Scroll was created for a single moment at WOW!house, but its story is one that lasts far beyond the room itself.
